It felt like we were on a different planet. The white sand reflecting the light from the sun seemed foreign, setting behind jagged mountains. It was hot, but not unbearable. We were enjoying our usual shenanigans -- running around like children who ate too much candy. I think because it was such a strange place it unlocked a childlike glee in us. Being there felt freeing and exciting, and we were engulfed in our own curiosity for this new place.
The dunes are pretty big at white sands, so it’s customary for park-goers to “sled” down the dunes on small plastic discs resembling trash can lids purchased from the park gift store close to $30. We got lucky that our AirBnB had nice sleds for us for free! I think that night was the highlight of an already amazing week. It was our last night in the park, and we definitely made the most of it.
